How to Choose a Marketing Agency in Austin

How an Austin business owner can choose a marketing agency: fit, who does the work, ownership, reporting on booked jobs, and how to compare proposals.

To choose a marketing agency in Austin, pick the one that has done your kind of work before, can show you who will actually run your account, will report on booked jobs instead of clicks, and leaves you owning your ad accounts, website and data. Everything else, the office, the slide deck, the size of the team, matters less than those four.

Austin has a lot of agencies. Some are large, some are a single person, and many are good at something. The hard part is not finding one. It is telling which one fits your business, your budget and the way you like to work. This guide is a practical way to do that.

Start with what you need, not what they sell

Before you talk to anyone, write down the one result you want most in the next six months. More calls from Google. Booked estimates from Facebook. Showing up on Google Maps in your part of town. A website that turns visitors into enquiries.

Then write down what you already have. A Google Business Profile with reviews. An old ads account. A website someone built years ago. A CRM, or a notebook by the phone.

This short list does two jobs. It stops you from buying a bundle of services you do not need. And it gives every agency the same brief, so their answers can be compared.

Match the agency to your type of business

An agency that does great work for software companies may not know how a plumber gets calls. Local service work has its own rules: Google Maps rankings, call tracking, service area settings, seasonality, and leads that need a callback within minutes.

Ask each agency what kinds of businesses they work with most. Look at their website. Do they talk about your kind of customer, or about brands and awareness in general? A home service business is usually better served by an agency that already knows what a booked job is worth and how to count one.

For context on how we think about this, read how Austin home service businesses get more leads.

Find out who does the work

This is the question that tells you the most. At many agencies the person who sells you is not the person who runs your account. That is not wrong by itself, but you should know.

Ask:

  • Who builds and manages the campaigns day to day?
  • Are they an employee, a contractor, or another company the agency resells?
  • How many other accounts does that person handle?
  • Can I talk to them before I sign?

A small agency where the owner runs your account can be a better fit than a larger one where you are handed to a junior. A larger agency can also be the right choice when you need several specialists at once. What matters is that you know which you are buying.

Check what you will own

You should own your Google Ads account, your Meta ad account, your Google Business Profile, your analytics, your domain and your website. The agency should get access to them, not hold them.

This sounds like a small detail until you leave. Owners who let an agency create accounts in the agency’s name sometimes lose years of ad history, reviews tied to a profile, or the website itself. Ask plainly: “If we part ways, what do I keep?” A good agency answers in one sentence.

Ask how they report

Many reports are long and say little. Impressions, clicks and click-through rate are useful to the person running the ads. They do not tell you whether the phone rang.

Ask what the monthly report will show. The answer you want includes calls, form leads, booked jobs where you can track them, and cost per booked job. Ask how they will count those. If they need you to mark which leads booked, that is fine. It means they care about the right number.

Also ask how often you will talk, and with whom. A short call each month with the person running your account is worth more than a polished PDF.

Compare proposals the right way

When proposals come in, put them side by side and check:

  • Does it answer the brief you gave, or a generic one?
  • Does it say what happens in the first month, step by step?
  • Does it separate ad spend from the agency fee?
  • Does it say how long the contract runs and how you leave?
  • Does it promise a specific result? Be wary if it does. Nobody controls the market, and honest agencies tell you what they will do, not what Google will do.

Pricing models differ a lot: flat monthly fees, a share of ad spend, project fees, and performance arrangements. We explain the trade-offs in how much a marketing agency in Austin costs.

Local or remote

You do not need an agency in your city to get good results. Plenty of strong work is done remotely. But there are real advantages to an agency that can meet you in person, see your shop, ride along on a job, or sit with your front desk to hear how calls are handled. Those visits show things a video call does not. We wrote more on that in why meeting your agency in person matters.

If an agency says it serves the Austin area, ask what that means in practice. Do they meet clients in person? Do they know the difference between running ads in central Austin and in nearby cities like Round Rock or Pflugerville? Local knowledge shows up in how they set service areas and budgets.

Look for evidence, not adjectives

Every agency says it is data-driven and results-focused. Ignore the words. Look for evidence you can check: case studies with real numbers, screenshots from real accounts, named experience with your platform, and a person you can look up.

For example, the founder of Fruitful Local, Nathan Synoground, has managed $20.5M in Google Ads across 150 client accounts since 2018. That is the kind of claim you can ask any agency to back up, including us. Ask to see it.

Trust the first month

The first month tells you a lot. A good agency asks many questions, audits what you have, fixes tracking before it spends, and tells you what it found in plain words. A weak one launches quickly and talks about “optimizing” without saying what changed.

A simple way to decide

If you are down to two or three options, choose the one that:

  • Understood your business fastest.
  • Named the person who will do the work.
  • Lets you own everything.
  • Will report on booked jobs.
  • Gave you a clear plan for the first month and an easy way to leave.
